Some progress…

Alright, so its been just about two days since I decided to quit video games.  I’ll just come out and say that it has been harder than I thought, and I have already sort of failed.  Yesterday in class I played a funny little flash game because the lecture was so boring.  I’m not considering this the biggest failure, but it really wasn’t in line with my goals :(

Also, I’ve decided to make a small change to my ‘rules’.  I’ve realized that a big part of a few of my friendships is playing games together.  That isn’t a sign of a bad relationship, but it is a shared interest/hobby/whatever you want to call it.  Maybe it’s bad that I’m changing the rules this early, but I think it will also give me some relief, right?

Anyways, I’m pleased with how things are going with the whole no games/tv, but I need to work on the productivity still.  If I drop games/tv but have nothing to show for it I might as well have kept them in my life.  So, I’m hoping to create a list of useful things I could work on everyday/week to fill my time.  And as I write this, I am realizing how lame this whole thing sounds… Whatever…

There are others out there, and with helpful words!!  This site has a number of blog posts with helpful material about giving up gaming.  In this particular one, the blogger (Tim Cameron) deletes the games as a first step.  Most of the games I play are my roommates’ xbox games.  So, I’m not about to toss those out, but I can eliminate many from my computer.

And… Done! Feels good.  Mostly.  I’m pissed that I spent money on all those to now throw them away.  But it is worth getting rid of them!

Why Video Games Are Hard To Give Up

Here is an interesting article about the psychology behind video games.

“the psychological ‘pull’ of games is largely due to their capacity to engender feelings of autonomy, competence, and relatedness”
-Richard M Ryan

So how can I fight this? Find other ways to feel competent and achieved. So, I’ll work out, go for a run, read a book, cook a meal, learn something new, etc. And remind myself that being good at video games, or accomplishing something in a video game isn’t that impressive.

Aiming for Progress

Alright. I’ve just decided that enough is enough. I continue to find myself wasting too much time playing video games and watching television. I spend too little time exercising, reading, and doing schoolwork. So, I’m giving it all up. From this point [4/3/11 at 1:07 pm] I am no longer going to play video games or watch television shows. I’m not going to participate no matter the circumstance.

To help me keep on track, I’ll report here occasionally. Part of my plan is to avoid reading, talking, or watching anything about video games and television shows. I’m hoping to create a list of rules, which I will share here as well.

Character is the ability to carry out a good resolution long after the excitement of the moment has passed.
-Cavett Robert

I don’t want this to be an idea that I drop tomorrow or the next day. I think that if I go almost overboard with it now, when I slow down I’ll still have good progress and determination. This isn’t something I’ve actually ever encountered someone doing either. There are tons of dieting and fitness blogers out there, but probably no “tech-dieters”. So, if you know of a blog or inspirational site, please let me know. Encouragement is needed! Wish me luck.

I know this has been around for quite some time, but it is so hilarious.  Always worth watching again, lol
